Fees
Interns who are Domestic Students
New Zealand and Australian citizens, and those who have been granted residence, are called ‘domestic students’. They qualify for an Equivalent Full-Time Student (EFTS) subsidy from the Tertiary Education Commission, and this allows Ȥҹapp to charge them a lower fee than the fee that international students pay.
For the July 2025 intake at Ȥҹapp, the tuition fees for domestic students were:
Primary: For the whole Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) $11,641
Secondary: For the whole Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) $9,051
(The fees for the Primary programme are higher because it is a longer programme: 155 credits for Primary rather than 120 credits for the Secondary programme.)
We will confirm the 2026 fees once the Tertiary Education Commission has released information on Annual Fees Movement. It is likely that the 2026 fees will be slightly higher than the 2025 fees.
Ȥҹapp charges tuition fees for domestic students in ‘portions’ that apply to a period of two or three terms.
Interns who are International Students
Government Immigration regulations require that international students pay their fees in full and in advance. For the January 2026 intake, the tuition fees for international students are:
Primary: $35,890
Secondary: $28,706
Where the Money Goes
Teachers’ employment contracts require that an allowance be paid to teachers who have student teachers with their classes. The following diagram shows how the fees are spent.
Other Costs
Police vetting Fee: A one-off fee of $10 is payable at enrolment.
Key bond: $10, refundable at end of programme
Administration Fee: $60 is charged each term to cover certain incidental costs.
First Aid: A one-off course fee of $175 if course required.
You should allow $600 per term to cover books, travel to schools, photocopying, printing and other activities.
Fees Protection
NZQA requires that all private training establishments have a fees protection scheme to protect students’ fees in the event of their provider’s financial or educational default. Ȥҹapp operates a scheme through the Public Trust whereby all our fees are paid into the Trust. The Trust then progressively releases this money to us.
Financial Assistance
Ȥҹapp teacher interns have the same access to the student support provisions – such as Student Loans – as do students training to be teachers at state tertiary providers. See for details. Ȥҹapp teacher interns are eligible to apply for any scholarships the government may offer, for example in targeted secondary subjects. See for details.
